By August, a San Diego yard can look perfectly healthy at breakfast and noticeably tired by late afternoon. Inland heat, dry air, reflected warmth from hardscape, and weeks without meaningful rain all pull moisture from a landscape at once.
The instinctive response is to water everything more. Sometimes that helps. Often, it creates runoff, shallow roots, fungal problems, or a surprisingly high water bill without addressing the real source of stress.
The short answer is this: during extreme heat, water early and deeply, check the soil before adding more, protect exposed soil with mulch, and postpone stressful maintenance. The goal is not to force peak growth during a heat wave. It is to help your lawn and plants maintain healthy roots until conditions improve.
Start With the Soil, Not the Sprinkler Timer
A wilted plant is not always a dry plant.
Leaves may droop during the hottest part of the day because they are losing water faster than the roots can replace it. If they recover in the evening, the soil may still contain adequate moisture. Watering again without checking can saturate the root zone and deprive roots of oxygen.
Push a finger, soil probe, or small trowel several inches into the ground. If the soil below the surface feels cool and slightly moist, wait. If it is dry at root depth, the plant likely needs water.
This simple check is especially useful in San Diego, where soil conditions can change within the same property. One bed may contain fast-draining sandy soil, while another has compacted clay that accepts water slowly. A single irrigation schedule rarely serves both areas well.
Water Deeply, Then Give Roots Time to Breathe

Treat Lawns Differently From Planting Beds
San Diego lawns do not all respond to heat in the same way. Cool-season grasses such as tall fescue tend to struggle during sustained summer heat. Warm-season varieties generally tolerate higher temperatures but may still show stress from poor coverage, compacted soil, or irrigation problems.
Raise the mowing height slightly during hot weather. Taller blades shade the soil and give the grass more leaf area for photosynthesis. Brown areas deserve diagnosis before extra watering. A repeating dry patch may indicate a misaligned sprinkler, poor head-to-head coverage, hydrophobic soil, pet damage, or soil compaction. If one section declines while the rest of the lawn stays green, the irrigation system is often the first place to look.
Mulch Is Your Landscape’s Heat Shield
Bare soil heats quickly and loses moisture directly to the air. A layer of organic mulch moderates soil temperature, slows evaporation, and suppresses weeds that would otherwise compete for water.
Apply mulch around shrubs, perennials, and trees, but leave breathing room around stems and trunks. Piling mulch against a trunk can hold excess moisture against the bark and invite decay.

Temporary shade cloth can help sensitive new plantings, particularly where reflected heat from stucco, glass, gravel, or paving creates a hotter microclimate than the forecast suggests.
Use Technology to Find Problems, Not Just Add Water
Smart irrigation controllers are increasingly common in water-wise San Diego landscapes, but a controller is only as accurate as the system connected to it.
